Many of us grew up being scolded for having negative thoughts or encouraged to simply change our mindset to feel better. In therapy, we often learn to use affirmations, identify cognitive distortions, and challenge negative thoughts. While these techniques have their place and good intentions behind them, for some individuals, they may feel inadequate for addressing deep-rooted issues.
Our minds are incredibly powerful, but when our bodies are under stress and our nervous system is disregulated, attempting to ease anxiety, depression, intrusive memories, and sleep problems by solely adjusting our thoughts may not yield the desired results.
The intricate workings of our nervous system connect us to the animal kingdom, driving our survival instincts in times of peril. The sympathetic nervous system takes the lead, orchestrating primal responses like fight, flight, or freeze to safeguard our bodies from imminent threats. These automatic reactions operate beneath our awareness, sharpening our focus on staying safe. Interestingly, during these moments, our prefrontal cortex, the seat of conscious thought and logical reasoning, takes a back seat, allowing our instincts to take over.
In moments of danger or stress, your body's sympathetic nervous system kicks in to prepare you to fight, flee, or freeze. Once the threat passes, the parasympathetic nervous system takes over to help restore balance and calm. This shift allows your body to rest, digest, and connect, promoting a return to a state of equilibrium after the fight or flight response.
Threats can vary and may include anything deemed as hazardous or unsettling in your surroundings. The amygdala and sympathetic nervous system operate independently of verbal communication with the prefrontal cortex, relying on past experiences as guides to assess the safety of a situation.
During early childhood, our brain and body memorize how safe or secure our environment feels and our capability to protect ourselves. These encoded experiences shape our perception of the world's safety and our own self-reliance.
The more challenging or turbulent our early life experiences, such as growing up in an environment with a mentally ill or substance-abusing parent, or facing trauma like the loss of a caregiver or abuse, the higher the likelihood of having an unbalanced nervous system.
In today's world, everyday stressors can trigger our nervous system as if they were threats. This explains why positive self-talk or attempts to shift your thoughts may not alleviate your symptoms when you're under pressure at work, in a room full of strangers, or about to deliver a major presentation.

By incorporating practices such as breathwork, somatic meditation, and guided imagery, we can guide our bodies towards a calmer, more balanced state, activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Given the longevity of these ingrained triggers and responses, reshaping the nervous system through such methods will require dedicated and consistent effort over time.A few techniques to help regulate the nervous system are:
Engage your mind: Visualize being in a serene place with someone you trust, surrounded by the calming sounds of nature or your favorite vacation spot, or simply cocooned in the comfort of your own bed.
Positive thinking, challenging negative thoughts, utilizing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and incorporating affirmations are highly effective interventions. However, it's crucial to understand the appropriate timing and methods for deploying these strategies. When we're feeling stressed or overwhelmed, rather than relying solely on cognitive strategies, it can be beneficial to prioritize grounding techniques that directly engage the body for a more immediate sense of relief.
